The House of Pwn: Burning Crusade Week One Wrapup

Level 63.
I logged off on Monday at 10:30PM and headed to my local Gamestop for the midnight release. I got there about 11PM, and I was eighth in line. By midnight, there were about 100 people behind me. I definitely did not expect that many people to show up. The game was in my hands at about 12:10AM Tuesday morning and I headed home.

Unfortunately I couldn't get a Collector's Edition, so I was stuck install from 4 CDs. Why is that in 2007 I can buy a computer with an HDDVD ROM drive, but I can't get my games on DVD?

I finished the install and I was able to login about 12:48AM. I had logged out right by the dark portal in Blasted Lands. I was very happy to see that the Alliance was still holding the portal on my PVP server. The portal had been a focal point of PVP battle for the previous week. About 5 seconds after I logged in, I was through the portal and zoning into Hell Fire Peninsula. I only played for about an hour, as I had to work the next day. Before I logged, I looked at my XP clock, and it said 8 hours to level 61. So I made my schedule for the rest of the week.

Wednesday Level 61
Thursday Level 62
Sunday Level 63

I had Thursday off, so I planned to grind through a whole level that day. I actually missed my Wednesday goal by about 15 minutes, but I did get 62 on Thursday, and easily hit 63 Saturday night.

I planned to get most of my XP from instances for 3 reasons:

1. I enjoy doing instances.
2. As a Paladin, my DPS is atrocious. Solo grinding is painful.
3. I play on a PVP server, and all the ganking really bothers me. I would probably be much happier on a PVE server.

So it wasn't long after I logged in Tuesday evening that I got in a group for Hell Fire Citadel Blood Furnace, the second instance of Hell Fire Citadel.

None of us had been in this instance before. I was the only healer in the group. We wiped twice, the first time when we didn't kill a summoner before he summoned way too many guys. The second time was a mispull. This instance has several very tricky pulls. We did not, however, wipe on any of the 3 bosses. This turned out to be a very easy instance. I spent most of my in-game time the next few days main healing Blood Furnace and Ramparts (the first wing of HFC). I think the final boss of ramparts is actually the hardest boss battle of the two instances. The dragon can kill your tank very quickly, and if that happens early, you're pretty much guaranteed to wipe. This is definitely the hardest boss battle to heal of the 6.

Friday night I got into the Slave Pens, the first instance of Coilfang Reservoir. I found out the hard way that I can't solo heal the second boss of the instance. We wiped three times on the boss. The boss puts a nasty DOT (damage over time) spell out. It does massive damage. It can't be removed, so the player who gets the dot must be healed a lot to survive. The DOT tends to go to the player who has aggro, which is usually the main tank. This was way too much damage for me to keep up with alone. The tank would invariably die. This was especially frustrating when we got the boss down to 5% on the second attempt. So I learned from this, and Saturday I got into another group for this instance. I made sure that the group had a second healer, and we were able to finish the instance. It was during this run that I hit level 63.

So that's the first week of BC from my perspective. I'll have to think of something else to write about next week.
